Blacksmith's can be found in Bamboo Village and Mountaintop Town. Traveling Blacksmiths can be found wandering on floors 8 - 14 of Table Mountain and will offer the same service, but cannot upgrade Pickaxes or transform weapons or shields.
Pickaxes normally have the File:Shiren 1 DS Weapon Seal Pickaxe.png, meaning when digging through walls they have a chance to break and disappear after each use. This includes swords they are combined with using a Melding Jar. If you bring a Pickaxe to a town Blacksmith, he'll ask to hold on to it until your next adventure and when you return, will present you with an unbreakable Pickaxe baring the File:Shiren 1 DS Weapon Seal Dig.png seal that can be safely melded to other items without risking breaking.
Just like normal upgrades, item transformations require 1,000 Gitan to be paid, then select the item. Seals on an item will not be transferred to its new form.

After completing the The Blacksmith's Apprentice (Quest), occasionally, the Smith's Apprentice will be standing where the Blacksmith does in Bamboo Village. As thanks for encouraging her to pursue her career as a blacksmith, she will upgrade Shiren's weapons for free. She also has a higher chance of adding a +3 to weapons, than the regular Blacksmith, though cannot perform special upgrades.

I see. |
Whoa, whoa, whoa! I can't I can't work on this here. |
Ask the blacksmith in town |
Blacksmith: A pickaxe? But it breaks after you use it for a while, right? |
It's hard to see the point of upgrading something like that. |
Would you mind leaving the pickaxe with me for a bit? |
Thank you. |
Come back again soon. |
