Draft:Shiren 5 2020:Onigiri
Summary
Real-world Onigiri are rice balls, and the word "onigiri" is apparently both singular and plural (like "fish"). Unfortunately, "Onigiri" is both the name of the category of items and also the name of one type of item, so throughout this description, the capitalized word "Onigiri" might refer to the specific type or the category.
Onigiri are the primary source of food in Shiren 5, though Peaches also restore a large amount of fullness and Grasses restore a small amount of fullness. Unlike Peaches, Onigiri don't ripen or rot naturally, and they will last indefinitely if left unaffected. That being said, except for the two rarest types of Onigiri (Silver and Gold), all other types of Onigiri kept in main inventory will turn into Rotten Onigiri if affected by a Decay Trap, and they will all turn into Grilled Onigiri if affected by fire (such as taking fire damage from a monster or trap, or by putting them in a Grilling Pot). These effects can be avoided by keeping Onigiri in pots. (Onigiri on the ground will also not become Grilled Onigiri if you are affected by fire, but, some types of damage destroy all items on the ground around you.) Though Grilled Onigiri have less food value and less magical value than some types of Onigiri, in can be important to deliberately convert other types of Onigiri into Grilled Onigiri anyway if healing items are in short supply.

Rotten Onigiri | くさったおにぎり | 50 | 17 | If you're really hungry, you can eat this to stave off hunger pains for a bit. However, it may decrease your strength or cause a status ailment. | Don't eat unless it's an emergency. Restores a small amount of fullness + poisons you (decreases strength by 1 and gives you Slow status ailment). Onigiri-type enemies will die instantly if you hit them with this. If you need food, don't throw it out, as you can probably grill it. | Most types of onigiri in your main inventory turn into Rotten Onigiri if you trigger a Decay Trap. |
Grilled Onigiri | 焼きおにぎり | 200 | 70 | Eat this to satiate your hunger and replenish a lot of fullness. This will also restore a bit of HP. If you eat it while your fullness is at max, your maximum fullness will increase. | Restores ~40 fullness and ~40 HP. | Most types of onigiri can be turned into Grilled Onigiri in two ways. (1) If they're in your main inventory and you take any fire damage such as from a monster or Explosion Trap. (2) If you put them into a Grilling Pot. |
Special Onigiri | 特製おにぎり | 400 | 140 | Eat this to satiate your hunger and replenish a bit of fullness. This will also give you a beneficial status effect. If you eat it while your fullness is at max, your maximum fullness will increase. | Restores ~40 fullness and gives one of 6 or 7 possible good effects. Can make a huge difference in dungeons where most items aren't pre-identified. See Gorger's Manor location page for details. | Found more often in stores, especially after clearing the Tower of Fortune. Found in many later dungeons as well, especially Gorger's Manor. |
Dog Onigiri | 巨犬なおにぎり | 500 | 175 | This is food for a giant dog. Humans can eat it to restore some of their fullness. Humans that eat it while at max fullness will increase their maximum fullness. | Restores ~40 fullness and says your pride as a human is wounded (no effect). | |
Silver Onigiri | 銀のおにぎり | 1,000 | 350 | While carrying it, you'll develop a bond with Onigiri. (Not effective if it's inside a pot.) It won't rot or burn or become affected by traps no matter what. You could eat it, but that seems like a waste... | If you keep it in main inventory, monsters will drop Onigiri more often. Note that this interferes with normal monster drops. Appears to be identical to one of the possible secret pot / new item effects on bracelets. | One way to get these is to beat Onigiri Hollow. |
Gold Onigiri | 金のおにぎり | 2,000 | 700 | While carrying it, you'll develop a bond with Large Onigiri. (Not effective if it's inside a pot.) It won't rot or burn or become affected by traps no matter what. You could eat it, but that seems like a waste... | If you keep it in main inventory, monsters will drop Large Onigiri more often. Note that this interferes with normal monster drops. There does not appear to be a secret pot / new item effect like this on bracelets or any other item. | One way to get these is to beat Onigiri Hollow. |
