Items can be blessed, cursed, sealed, or have none of these modifiers. An item can have at most one of these modifiers at a time. Here's what each modifier does/means at a high level:

  • Blessed:
    • The buy and sell prices of the item are increased by 10%. Any decimal amount is truncated (aka rounded down).
    • The item has a very high (99%+) chance to resist being cursed, sealed, or turned into an onigiri directly due to traps or monster attacks.
      • Instead, the item will lose it's blessing ~25% of the time.
      • In 500 hours of Shiren, I've only ever seen a blessed item be cursed/sealed directly by a Curse Trap or Cursister monster twice. The first time was with a visible Curse Trap that I accidentally stepped on, so I thought visibility of the trap mattered, but the 2nd time was with an invisible trap. Working theory is that there's a 1% chance for the blessing to fail to protect against these types of attacks.
    • The item's effect will be roughly doubled; see chart below for details.
  • Cursed:
    • The buy and sell prices of the item are decreased by 20%. Any decimal amount is truncated (aka rounded down).
    • Only swords, shields, and bracelets can be cursed.
      • Torches and Sticky Pots can be equipped but can't be cursed.
    • A cursed item that is equipped can't be voluntarily unequipped.
  • Sealed:
    • The buy and sell prices of the item are decreased by 20%. Any decimal amount is truncated (aka rounded down).
    • For consumables, the item cannot be used.
    • For durables, the item's abilities and upgrade value are nullified.
    • See chart below for details.

More detailed information by item type. This chart focuses on usage impacts and omits the price impact and blessing's protection impact mentioned above. N/A means that type of item cannot have that type of modifier.

Item Type Blessing Curse Seal
Swords It is probably the case that a blessed sword does more damage. A blessing may even improve the effects of runes. However, this would need more testing. It's generally not worth it to bless a sword because the blessing wears off quickly as you hit monsters. If equipped, cannot be unequipped. Item can still gain experience and level up. An NPC in the Beginner House in Inori Village gives some info about this. Working theory is that a seal nullifies the upgrade value (aka the attack bonus) as well as any runes on a sword. This can radically reduce the sword's effectiveness (e.g. a +99 sword should now act as a +0 sword). IIRC, a sealed sword can still gain experience and level up.
Torches A blessed torch may burn twice as long, and/or may light a larger area, but this needs more testing. N/A IIRC, torches can be sealed. If so, they cannot be burned/lit, and will only do 2 damage if thrown as a projectile.
Shields It is probably the case that a blessed shield provides better protection. A blessing may even improve the effects of runes. However, this would need more testing. It's generally not worth it to bless a shield because the blessing wears off quickly as monsters hit you. If equipped, cannot be unequipped. Item can still gain experience and level up. An NPC in the Beginner House in Inori Village gives some info about this. Working theory is that a seal nullifies the upgrade value (aka the defense bonus) as well as any runes on a shield. This can radically reduce the shield's effectiveness (e.g. a +99 shield should now act as a +0 shield). IIRC, a sealed shield can still gain experience and level up.
Bracelets I have never noticed a blessing positively impact the magic effect of a bracelet. But, this could be because most bracelets have boolean effects (e.g. Alert, Cleansing, Monster Detector, etc.) which can't easily be doubled. It is possible some bracelets will have an improved effect when blessed but this needs more testing. (Regardless, it's still generally a good idea to bless bracelets when you can, due to the general protection effect for all blessed items mentioned above this chart. That is, all blessed items have a very high chance to resist becoming cursed, sealed, or turned into onigiri.) If equipped, cannot be unequipped. If equipped, the item has no magic effect(s).
Grasses Generally speaking, consuming a blessed grass has double the effect, including double the food value. For grasses with boolean effects (e.g. Warp Grass, Antidote Grass, etc.), there is no doubling of the effect but the food value is still doubled. Consuming a blessed Strength Grass while at -1 from maximum strength will only bring you back up to maximum strength, not increase your maximum strength. If you collapse with a blessed Undo Grass or Revival Grass in your inventory, the blessing will be consumed but the grass will remain intact and can be re-blessed. Presumably using a blessed grass as a projectile weapon against a monster also has double the effect, though this needs more testing. N/A Cannot be eaten. If thrown as a projectile, will only do 2 damage and not have other magic effects.
Scrolls Generally speaking, reading a blessed scroll consumes the blessing but not the scroll, thus allowing you to use it twice or to re-bless it after using it once. Exception: reading a blessed Extraction Scroll will consume the item. (Without this exception, a player could create infinite value with a handful of scrolls and a Blessing Pot.) A blessed Blank Scroll retains its blessing when you write on it. Presumably using a blessed scroll as a projectile weapon against a monster also has double the effect, though this needs more testing. N/A Cannot be read. If thrown as a projectile, will only do 2 damage and not have other magic effects.
Pots Blessing does not appear to have any positive impact on the magic effects of a pot. (Regardless, it's still generally a good idea to bless pots when you can, due to the general protection effect for all blessed items mentioned above this chart. That is, all blessed items have a very high chance to resist becoming cursed, sealed, or turned into onigiri.) N/A You can't insert items into an "insert-type" pot that is sealed, and you can't open an "open-type" pot that is sealed. If thrown as a projectile, will only do 2 damage and not have other magic effects. (To the best of my knowledge, throwing a pot at a monster only ever does 2 damage and never causes any magic effect on the monster, regardless of whether or not the pot is sealed, blessed, or has neither of these modifiers, but this needs more testing.) Throwing a sealed Black Hole Pot will still create Pitfall Traps. It is likely that throwing a sealed 4-2-8 Pot will still cause an explosion but this has not been confirmed. It is worth testing to see if throwing a sealed Unbreakable Pot or Modder's Pot will cause the pot to break. It is worth testing to see if throwing a sealed Monster Pot or Zalokleft Pot will still create confused monsters.
Staves For staves that have a boolean impact (e.g. Swap, Transient, Pinning, Trap Deletion, Balance, etc.), there is no extra benefit when the staff is blessed. For staves that have a numeric impact (e.g. Electric), the impact is doubled when it is blessed. It is probably the case that staves with a time-duration impact (e.g. Slow, Clone, etc.) have double the duration when blessed, but this needs more testing. One test in particular that might be interesting is to wave a blessed Glorious Staff at a monster when Reflection is in effect. Without blessing, the Glorious Staff bolt reflects back at you and gives you 500 experience points, so when blessed, it probably gives you 1,000 experience points. N/A If waved, a charge will be consumed but no magic bullet will come out. If thrown as a projectile, will only do 2 damage and not have other magic effects.
Talismans N/A N/A N/A
Onigiri Eating a blessed onigiri adds double food value. If you're already full when you eat it, your stomach size increases by double the normal amount. It may provide extra magic value (e.g. more healing for a Grilled Onigiri, possibly longer-lasting special effect from Special Onigiri), but this needs more testing. Throwing a blessed onigiri at a monster probably just does 2 damage but needs more testing. N/A Cannot be eaten. If thrown as a projectile, will only do 2 damage and not have other magic effects.
Peaches Eating a blessed peach adds double food value. If you're already full when you eat it, your stomach size increases by double the normal amount. It may provide extra magic value, but this needs more testing. Throwing a blessed peach at a monster probably just does 2 damage but needs more testing. N/A Cannot be eaten. If thrown as a projectile, will only do 2 damage and not have other magic effects.
Arrows N/A N/A N/A
Stones N/A N/A N/A
Traps It is probably the case that traps cannot be blessed. Either way, this needs more testing. N/A It is probably the case that traps cannot be sealed. Either way, this needs more testing.
Others Some items in this category cannot exist in your main inventory at all (e.g. Dirt, flowers); these cannot be blessed, cursed, or sealed. Gitan can be blessed but IIRC this does not increase the amount of money you can from it, and it probably does not increase the amount of damage dealt if thrown as a projectile either. A blessed Points Card will accrue double the normal number of points per Points Trap, but, will lose the blessing very quickly so it's not worth it to bless the Points Card. IIRC, catstones cannot be blessed, which makes them more vulnerable to being turned into onigiri, but this needs confirmation. N/A Some items in this category cannot exist in your main inventory at all (e.g. Dirt, flowers); these cannot be blessed, cursed, or sealed. Gitan can be sealed, and if they are, they cannot be added to your gitan wallet, but they can still be picked up as items. Throwing a sealed gitan bag only does a measly 2 damage, radically reducing its effectiveness as a projectile. A Points Card can be sealed, and if so, no points will be accrued when you step on a Points Trap. IIRC, catstones cannot be sealed but this needs confirmation.

Here are all the known ways of dealing with curses and seals:

  • Methods that are more or less safe:
    • Inserting the item (other than pots) into an Exorcism Pot will remove any curse or seal.
    • Inserting the item (other than pots) into a Blessing Pot will remove any curse or seal and apply a blessing if the item type can be blessed.
    • Reading a Fixer Scroll while any equipped items are cursed or sealed may remove the curses and seals on all of the items. (The Fixer Scroll can do this but can also do other positive things, and will not do all possible positive things at the same time. It will, however, choose to do a positive thing that the player needs.)
    • Targeting the item with an Exorcism Scroll will remove any curse or seal. [UNTESTED] I think this has a small chance to remove all curses and seals from all items in your main inventory but I don't remember for sure. [/UNTESTED]
    • Targeting the item with a Blessing Scroll will remove any curse or seal and apply a blessing if the item type can be blessed.
    • Targeting a sword or shield with a Plating Scroll will remove any curse or seal and add the Rustproof rune if possible.
    • [UNTESTED] Theoretically, the wandering plating NPC could be used the same way as a Plating Scroll. [/UNTESTED]
    • Targeting a sword with a Fate Scroll will remove any curse or seal and increase the upgrade value if possible.
    • Targeting a shield with an Earth Scroll will remove any curse or seal and increase the upgrade value if possible.
    • Targeting a pot with a Pot God Scroll does not remove any seal but does increase the pot capacity if it's below 5 even if the pot is sealed. (Leaving this hear to remind myself that I tested this.)
    • Triggering a Strip Trap will remove all equipped items, even if they are cursed.
    • Consuming a Nymph Grass will remove all equipped items, even if they are cursed.
    • For items that can have either a curse or a seal (swords, shields, or bracelets), a Curse Trap can be used to convert a seal into a curse or vice versa. Drop all other items then trigger the trap. In effect, the trap randomly chooses between curse and seal, overwriting whatever was there, and thus there's a 50% chance it will be the other type. If you're in a pinch, this method can let you unequip a cursed item at the cost of sealing it, or, enable the magic effects of a sealed item at the cost of cursing it.
    • [UNTESTED] Theoretically, a Curse Pot could be used the same way as a Curse Trap. [/UNTESTED]
    • [UNTESTED] Theoretically, a Curse Scroll could be used the same way as a Curse Trap. [/UNTESTED]
    • [UNTESTED] Theoretically, an Imabikiso (grass) could be used the same was as a Curse Trap. Make sure you have nothing else in your inventory other than items you want to re-curse/re-seal. [/UNTESTED]
    • A certain wandering NPC can remove a single curse or seal for 500 gitan. He won't take your money if you don't have any cursed or sealed items. [UNTESTED] I believe this is true even if you have unidentified items in your main inventory, so, you could use this to determine if there are any curses or seals on any of your unidentified items in aggregate. [/UNTESTED] If you pay him for his services, there is a small chance he will remove all curses and seals from all items in your main inventory.
    • The curse breaker NPC in Nekomaneki Village can remove all curses and seals on all items in your main inventory for 500 gitan. [UNTESTED] I believe he won't take your money if you have no cursed or sealed items in your main inventory. [/UNTESTED] There is a small chance that any items he fixes will become blessed.
    • When using a Synthesis Pot or Modder's Pot, the modifier status of the last same-kind item inserted will be the modifier status of the resulting item. For example, inserting a cursed Ordinary Stick then an unmodified Dull Gold Edge into a Synthesis Pot will result in an unmodified Ordinary Stick with the Rustproof rune.
    • [UNTESTED] Theoretically, a Darth Scroll should be able to remove a curse or seal from a random sword or shield in your inventory -- one that you didn't target with the Darth Scroll -- and increase the upgrade value if possible. If you want to try using this, you should probably make sure that there are only two total swords/shields in your main inventory, the one from which you want to remove the curse or seal and the other one that you target with the Darth Scroll. [/UNTESTED]
  • Methods that destroy the cursed or sealed item:
    • Targeting any item with a Sale Scroll will convert it to gitan, even if cursed or sealed.
    • Targeting any item with an Onigiri Scroll will convert it into an Onigiri, even if cursed or sealed.
    • [UNTESTED] Can a Grilling Pot also remove a curse or seal? Does a Grilling Pot destroy items put into it? [/UNTESTED]
    • [UNTESTED] You may be able to remove a curse or seal via a Fever Pot. Fill the Fever Pot with multiple copies of the same type of item, and the pot will break and spread 2x the number of inserted items on the ground around you. It is my understanding that Fever Pots ignore modifier status (cursed/sealed/blessed/none), rank (level 1 - level 8), upgrade value (+#), runes, charges, quantity, etc., and that all resulting items are unmodified level 1 with no upgrade value or runes, or a random low number of charges/quantity. This is destructive in the sense that some very valuable attributes can be destroyed along with the curse/seal. [/UNTESTED]
    • If you don't otherwise want the item and it isn't both cursed and equipped, you can of course use it as fodder in a pot that consumes items such as a Sale Pot, Presto Pot, Zen Pot, Dodger Pot, Perceptive Pot, Reflection Pot, or Floramorph Pot. Likewise, you can put the item into an unknown pot to try to identify which type of pot it is, which might destroy the item if it's one of these pots.
    • If the item is not both cursed and equipped, you can of course just plain sell it for a reduced price. (Even at home in Nekomaneki Village, you must first uncurse or otherwise remove a cursed item before it can be sold.)
  • Methods that rely on monsters and thus are dangerous:
    • [UNTESTED] Theoretically, a Cursister family monster could be used the same way as a Curse Trap. [/UNTESTED]
    • [UNTESTED] A Swordsman family monster should be able to knock away a cursed equipped item. This may only work for shields and bracelets. [/UNTESTED]
    • [UNTESTED] A Field Knave family monster may be able to knock away a cursed equipped item. Need to confirm if they can hit equipped items or not. [/UNTESTED]
    • [UNTESTED] A Bored Koppa family monster may be able to forcibly change your sword, shield, or bracelet (by throwing another such item at you and causing you to swap your equipment). This could make you remove a cursed item, but it could also make you equip a cursed item. If you have 2 bracelets equipped, I believe this always bumps the 2nd bracelet, unless the 2nd bracelet is cursed and the 1st bracelet is not. [/UNTESTED]
    • [UNTESTED] I'm reasonably confident that cursed or sealed items can be used in Mixer family monster recipes. It is unknown how the modifier status of recipe components affect the modifier status of the resulting item. Working theory is that either the resulting item will always have no modifier, or, will have the modifier status of the last item in the recipe. [/UNTESTED]
    • [UNTESTED] Inserting any item into a Sticky Pot should unequip your sword even if it's cursed. Then you must attack monsters many times with the pot before it breaks, and the item you inserted into the Sticky Pot is returned (IIRC it drops at your feet). This should leave you with the cursed sword unequipped. [/UNTESTED]
  • Methods that are both destructive and dangerous:
    • [UNTESTED] Theoretically, an Onigiri family monster may be able to turn a cursed or sealed item into an Onigiri, but, not all such monsters can target equipped items. [/UNTESTED]
  • Additional notes:
    • You can of course use a Blank Scroll in place of any scroll mentioned above, provided you've already read that scroll at least once before.
    • You can use a Perception Grass to help find a Strip Trap or other useful trap. Works best on new floors, esp. those with a monster house. And of course you can create your own monster house if you have a Monster House Scroll.
    • Without a Perception Grass, it may still be worth swinging your sword over every tile in a monster house to try to find a Strip Trap or other useful trap.
    • You can lead a Mecharoid family monster around in circles and hope it creates a Strip Trap or other useful trap.
    • If you have unidentified scrolls, and you don't mind consuming them, and you don't mind destroying the cursed item, try clearing the floor, standing just inside a room, then reading all your unidentified scrolls and targeting the cursed item. ~7 out of 52 scrolls will solve the problem one way or another!
    • Likewise, if you have unidentified grasses, and don't mind consuming them, try preparing as if one of the unidentified scrolls is Nymph Grass or possibly Imabikiso then eating the unidentified grasses.
