Managed to find an address which sets which floor you're on: 7E8427

It decides what level you start at:

if initial floor=1-6, start lv1

if initial floor=7-13, start lv12(1200 EXP)

if initial floor=14-20, start lv20(6000 EXP)

if initial floor=21+, start lv27(25000 EXP)

It decides what monsters appear (there's visible monster progression from floors 1-29)

And setting it to floor 2 even brings up a partner event that I think was week 1 only

Interestingly, it doesn't have any effect on progress in the week's episode - you always go through 8 floors, even if they're all 'floor 1'

I also couldn't find a way of triggering the previous towns from the other weeks, though the 'reset and go back to town X!' messages are still there

And yep, the partner was on floor 2 on week 1

Took a look at the versions of Shiren, seems like the script is nearly identical between the retail/BS, just a couple lines added/missing here and there I'd need to synch up

Also: the script is the same between BS week 2 and BS week 4, it looks like text for all the weeks are in there

specific script differences: BS is missing what looks like an opening cutscene, and has these extra lines: 'All of your items were identified' 'Your belly stopped emptying' 'Your belly started emptying again' 'The floor suddenly got brighter' 'An item appeared', 'BS Cave', 'You safely reached the top of the dungeon with Surara', 'Shopkeeper: "I'm having a sale right now! The price for the items you bought is only ###, is that okay?"'

I guess most of those are used for soundlinked events

Still need to finish transcribing the font from both versions, but if space can be found in the BS ROM, might be easier than expected to insert the translation

...or perhaps not. Looks like the fantranslation completely rewrote the font handling, even the pointer list the Japanese text uses was ignored

Turns out there's a debug mode with floor skip / give item / sound and animation test powers and more

Fantranslation didn't find it and either dummied out or mistranslated all of its text :(

To unlock the debug mode, change 0x8000-0x8001 in the ROM from FF FF to 00 00(edited)

After that, you can press Start to skip a floor, or various key combos + Start are debug features

《BS風来のシレン スララを救え》は1996年4月28日から毎日1時間、4週間連続で放送され、 5月24日に終了した。ゲームの過程はSFC版初作と基本的に同じで、シレンが黄金郷を探すストーリに始まり、途中渓谷の宿場、竹林の村、山頂の町、奇岩谷を通って、苦労の末に黄金都市へ到着し、そして最後に魔蝕虫を倒して黄金コンドルを解放する。第1週は"冒険の旅路"、第2週は"ペケジと共に奇岩谷を目指す"、第3週は"シレンの旅は続く"、 第4週は完結編で"番付で上位を狙う秘訣"となっていて、実際にはSFC初作の冒険の過程を4つの部分に分けて週ごとの放送をして、プレーヤーはそれぞれの部分の終点に到着することでゲームの内容が終わる。SFC版初作にあった、ダンジョンで迷子になった少女スララを奇岩谷の父母の元へ連れて行くというイベントが本作ではメインストーリーとなっており、救助に成功してようやく続きを遊ぶことができる。これ以外にも少なからず新しいイベントがあり、かつ特定の時間にのみ発生する特殊なイベントがあって、例えば店の割引販売、腕輪鑑定師がシレンの持っている腕輪を鑑定してくれる等々。道具に関しては多くのオリジナルアイテムが登場して、例えば"オリジナルの壺"、"分身の巻物"など。サウンドリンクゲームなので、主要な登場キャラクターのセリフは全て音声を付けてあって、これはシレンの作品の中で唯一音声がある作品だ。本作は限られた時間内でストーリーを進めなくてはならず、不思議のダンジョンでこのようなシステムが導入されるのは初めての試みであり、以前のように繰り返し装備を鍛えてから挑む方法が使えなくなったので、難度は大いに上昇した。

1997年6月に任天堂は公式サイトで"あなたが再び遊びたいサウンドリンクゲームの名作"の投票イベントを行った。これは時期を逃したプレイヤーや以前クリアし損ねたプレイヤーに再び遊ぶ機会を提供するための企画で、《BS風来のシレン スララ救え》は1位の得票数で再放送の機会を得た。このことはまさにユーザーたちの本作に対する好感度を表しているといえる。7月1日から7月28日までの4週間に一通り再放送して、その後7月29日から8月4日までは番外編"ガイバラの忠告"を放送、次いで以前の以前の開始編から最終編に直接行けるようにした。ガイバラは壺作りで有名な陶芸家で、SFC初作の山頂の町の壺イベントにおけるその癇癪持ちの性格が依然として今なお皆の記憶に残っていることであろう。番外編のイベントではこれが忠実に再現されていて、もちろんまた多くのオリジナルなイベントにも登場して、例えば各種の壺の使用方法と識別方法を教えてくれる。

基本的にはSFC版初作の強化版といったところだが、音声を加えたことや限られた時間内で冒険を達成させるという独特の要素で楽しみが大いに増えたが、惜しいことにプレイした人が国内にほとんどいないので、真に残念に思う。
