Sato's Rotten Riceball is an early side quest in Shiren 3 given by Sato. The quest has a very limited time window, becoming unavailable after the Sword Tiger in the Ruined Temple is defeated.
Otsutsuki Village
When Shiren talks to Sato, she welcomes him to the "Tree of Yone" food stand and tries to sell him the shop's only item, a Rotten Riceball. Her brother Kasuke whines that he's starving and asks to eat that riceball since nobody's gonna buy it, but Sato refuses since it's the only item she can sell and they have to survive until their dad (Kumaji the Blacksmith) gets better. Kasuke wishes their mom was still alive and cries in grief, to which Sato reminds him that they promised not to say things like that and tries to calm him down. After he calms down, she returns to offering Shiren the riceball, saying she thinks it's edible and she put all her heart into making it.
- If you refuse to buy it, you can still buy it later by leaving the village, reentering, and talking to Sato again.
- If you do decide to buy it, Sato will ask for a price that you can haggle down, but the post-story reward for completing this quest will be different according to the amount you pay her:
This early in the game there's only 2 sources of income, plus a 3rd if playing Easy Mode:
- 200 Gitan and a Revival Herb can be found from talking twice to Ippei next to the entrance to the bar south of Sato.
- Gitan and items can be found in the Sanuki Forest, which can be explored multiple times.
- On Easy Mode you start with a Nodachi and 5 Revival Herbs in your inventory. You could sell them for quick Gitan, but this is not recommended because Revival Herbs aren't common drops in the dungeons.
After the Sword Tiger is defeated, Sato and Kasuke will stay inside the Blacksmith's house for the rest of the main story; if you didn't already buy Sato's Rotten Riceball you won't be able to anymore (and thus won't reward from her in post-story).
After the main story is completed, the postgame begins with Sato inviting Shiren to the village again, promising him riceballs. When Shiren talks to her, she'll tell him about the Hourai Hot Springs tournament with the grand prize of 100,000 Gitan and ownership of the hot springs, then give him his invitation, a Riceball, and an extra item if he bought the Rotten Riceball from her.
