To unlock the Blacksmith, first speak with his daughter Sato who will be attempting to sell a rotten riceball out front of the shop. They wish to do this to help their sick father and feed themselves. She will charge you 600 Gitan at first though you can barter to lower this price. However much you give them does not have a strong impact on the game. After doing this, you will want to speak with the sick blacksmith at any point during the game, as he will give you a story about himself. After you speak with him, check his work bench or furnace in the room and start clicking your action button, you should find and obtain the Tattered Scroll quest item. After traveling to the past, you will want to speak with the blacksmith's ancestor. You can do this at any time after unlocking the past, the earliest would be after completing Ochimizu Pass in the main story. Doing that opens up Otsutsuki Village in the past to you. Simply visit the blacksmith's shop in the past and speak with the ancestor while you have the tattered scroll in your possession. He will give you medicine for his distant descendant and gives you a new version of the scroll. Finally, return to the sick blacksmith and he will now provide his services to you after you enter any dungeon and return to Otsutsuki Village. | To unlock the Blacksmith, first speak with his daughter Sato who will be attempting to sell a rotten riceball out front of the shop. Introduction
The blacksmith Kumaji (Japanese: クマジ) resides in his own house within Otsutsuki Village. You can easily identify this house as it has a large red banner on the front of it. He lives with his children Sato (Japanese: サト) and Kasuke (Japanese: カスケ). The blacksmith in this game is fairly unique compared to other games in the Shiren series as he is actually locked from the player at the start. He is severely ill, thus incapacitating him and preventing you from utilizing his services right away. This won't be remedied until you finish the Blacksmiths side quest.
Blacksmiths Quest (Required to use Blacksmith services)
Services
Each of the blacksmith's services are limited to being utilized once per visit in this game. After which he will have some strange excuse such as running out of materials preventing the player from rapidly abusing his services. They will refresh upon entering and exiting any dungeon.

Slot Adding Tip - Before the first time you speak with the blacksmith regarding adding a slot, make sure you save your game. By doing so you can save scum the item he requests of you. This can be really important to avoid missing out on using this feature anytime during a relevant part of your play through, as the blacksmith can ask for any item in the game without reservation. Often times he asks for extremely rare post game dungeon items that can be insanely difficult to come by. After you speak with him, should you save your game the item he requests of you will be locked. After the first time you use this feature, make sure that you always save your game before using the add slot feature to enhance your gear. He locks into his request item as soon as you use the feature, so you can reset if you don't like the next item he asks of you. Though doing this method can be slightly time consuming as you will have to constantly reload and re-add the slot to your item until a favorable request item appears.
Item Transformation
When you add seal slots to your items, the blacksmith will give you a random cryptic message that he found on an old scroll in his shop. These messages needed to be memorized or written down by the player as the game never tracks this information. What they refer to are Item Transformations. If you fuse certain Weapons, Shields and Armbands with certain seals, then offer them to a specific Dragon Orb, they can transform into a more powerful item. Here are the instructions clean and clear. Some items might need to be brought back to the Smith or transformed using a Jar of Change. These items are far more powerful than most other items you can find in dungeons, and can be helpful in easing the post game dungeons that allow you to carry in items.
