The main character and partner are the main Pokémon used by the player in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity. They are chosen at the beginning of the story from a list of five possible Pokémon with predetermined stats and moves. They start off with moves that Pokémon of the same species can't learn otherwise. The game first asks for the Pokémon to use as the main character, and later asks for the Pokémon to use as the partner. The Pokémon that has been chosen as the main character can't be selected as the partner. In the Japanese version the player is asked if the partner is male or female after selecting the Pokémon.
