Chocobo 2:Magic Books

Magic Books (Japanese: 魔法の本) are a type of Items found in  Chocobo's Dungeon 2. Magic Books can stack up to 99, and have varying effects. The majority of magic books deal elemental damage to a single target and level up in power after continued use. They're also used to activate certain Dungeon mechanisms in dungeons, such as Stoves. The second type of book, Trick Books, select a random spell from a list, do not interact with Dungeon mechanisms, and do not level up. Magic Books are always identified.

Spell Level Up Chart

The magic books that deal elemental damage have spell levels that determine the amount of damage the spell deals when cast. Spell levels increase when the magic book corresponding to the spell (Aero, Blizzard, Drain, Fire, Quake, and Thunder) is used a certain amount of times. The "To Next" value found in the menu indicates the number of times a spell must be used to level up. In addition to increasing damage, spells gain new animations at Spell Levels 9 and 17, representing the -a and -aga versions of the spells (e.g. Fira, Blizzaraga). Although the animations change at these levels, the names in the menu are still displayed as the base forms such as fire and blizzard.
