Invisibility
Traps that are pre-placed on the floor are ordinarily invisible. They become permanently visible if you attack the air over them, if you step on them (whether they trigger or not), or if you deliberately trigger them while floating. When visible, traps show up as X's on your minimap.
Traps that are pre-placed on the floor are ordinarily invisible. They become permanently visible if:

(a) you swing your sword/fists over them or

(b) you step on them while not floating, whether or not they trigger or

(c) you deliberately trigger them via the Feet menu.

Traps become temporarily visible if you eat Perception Grass, but if you then get blinded and recover from blindness, you won't be able to see traps that you didn't make permanently visible. Most new traps that you create (e.g. by triggering a Multiplication Trap, by wearing a Trap Bracelet, by reading a Monster House Scroll, etc.) are also invisible to begin with, though there is at least one exception: breaking a Black Hole Pot will create visible Pit Traps around the place where the pot broke, one trap per slot/space in the pot that was broken. New traps created by monsters, however, are visible, even if they were created in a room far away from your current location.

Whether or not a trap is visible, it will not show on your minimap with an Item Detector Bracelet until you see the trap in person, just like items normally do without remote item detection. They show up as X's rather than the usual blue dot for other items.
Traps become temporarily visible if you eat Perception Grass and gain the Farseeing Status Abnormality.

Pressure Activation
Traps that you create by triggering a Multiplication Trap, wearing a Trap Bracelet, or reading a Monster House Scroll start out invisible. Karakuroids create visible traps.
Traps trigger about 85% of the time. The triggering rate seems unaffected by whether or not the trap is visible. You can forcibly trigger a trap by standing on it and using the Feet menu, and throwing an item on top of a visible trap will always trigger it. Monsters trigger traps instead of Shiren while Trapper Bracelet Mode is in effect.

<br />
Traps trigger 84% of the time if invisible, and 62% of the time if visible. You can forcibly trigger a trap by standing on it and using the Feet menu, or throwing an item on top of a (permanently?) visible trap.

An item cannot occupy the same tile as a trap. So if a thrown or dropped item lands somewhere you didn't expect, the tile where the item should have landed has an invisible trap. However, if a thrown/dropped item should have landed on a permanently visible trap, it will first trigger the trap then land somewhere else.
An item cannot occupy the same tile as a trap. So if a thrown or dropped Item lands somewhere you didn't expect, the tile where the item should have landed has an invisible trap.

Traps cannot be destroyed by an explosion.
Traps cannot be destroyed by an explosion.

Placement Restrictions
Arrow traps have a chance of disappearing each time they trigger. Monster Trap, Summon Trap, Time Switch Trap and Point Switches always disappear after triggering.
Traps are never pre-placed in shops, in hallways, or on entrance tiles just inside pre-existing hallways. New traps you create that are invisible (e.g. by wearing a Trap Bracelet) also adhere to these constraints, but monsters can create visible traps anywhere. If you dig your own entrance into a room, beware that the entrance tile may contain a trap. It is not known if a new invisible trap may be created on entrance tiles adjacent to new hallways that didn't exist when the floor was created. Despite these restrictions on trap placement, there is no guarantee that there will always be a safe route to get where you want to go. In particular, you may be unable to reach some items in small monster houses without walking over one or more traps.

No items can exist on water tiles or void tiles, and traps are never pre-placed under rock outside of the Explosion Rocks minigame.

Trapper Bracelet Mode
In Trapper Bracelet Mode, you can see all traps, traps affect monsters not you, and you can pick up and move traps just like other items. You enter this mode if you equip a Trapper Bracelet (not a Trap Bracelet!) or a new item equivalent. Trapper Bracelet Mode is also permanently enabled in Gen's Turf and Trapper's Sandbox.

<br />
Placement
Traps are never pre-placed in shops, in hallways, or on entrance tiles just inside pre-existing hallways. New traps you create that are invisible (e.g. by wearing a Trap Bracelet) also adhere to these constraints, but Karakuroids can create traps anywhere when they die.

Variable Longevity
Traps are never pre-placed under rock outside of the Explosion Rocks minigame.
Different types of traps have different chances to disappear when triggered, though the precise formula is not known. For example, if you're trying to harvest arrows from an arrow trap by throwing rocks onto the trap, you can get 1 to ~30 arrows out per trap, but the trap will eventually disappear. (Perhaps arrow traps have a 5% - 10% chance to disappear any time they are triggered?) Points Traps, on the other hand, always trigger and always disappear after a single use. And on the opposite end of the spectrum, a "Spring Device" always triggers but never disappears.

Special Traps
Special Traps
There is a type of special traps that are always visible. They always trigger (regardless of any item the player has), never disappear, and are unaffected by Trapper Bracelet Mode.
Some special traps can never disappear or be removed in any way. These traps are always visible, and always trigger when you step on them.

On floors with separate rooms but no hallways, every room has a special Spring Trap which you can step on to warp to a random location elsewhere on the floor. This Spring Trap also appears on the 2x2 item islands, in the 4x4 vaults filled with Gitan, and in Pick-A-Choice shops. Pick-A-Choice shops also have a special Pit Trap. The Jumping Floors in Tower of Fortune are also special traps.

Common Mitigations
<br />
* Perception Grass lets you see all traps, while Trap Deletion Scroll deletes all traps on the floor (except special traps). Waving a Trap Deletion Scroll will delete all traps in a straight line.
* Floating Bracelet (available as an Inori Cave wish and in some difficult dungeons) lets you avoid all traps, although you can still trigger them deliberately.
* Trapper Bracelet enables Trapper Bracelet Mode, which makes it so monsters trigger traps instead of you.
* You can attack over every tile to reveal any trap before you walk on it. Doing this for an entire dungeon run is slow and tedious, and can result in starvation. However it can be worth it in specific situations.
** For small monster houses, swing over every tile that does not have a visible item on it and that isn't an entrance/exit tile, to reveal all traps in that room.
** For larger monster houses, swing over every tile you need to step on to pick up all the items you want to pick up, preferably in some sort of pattern so you can remember which tiles you've checked and which you haven't.
** If a monster knocks off your items to the floor, check for traps as you move to retrieve it so you don't risk an Explosion, Pit or Floor Warp Trap.

|Log comes out the opposite direction from the way Shiren is facing, passing over the trap. It's possible to get stuck in a loop when it's against a wall and you are facing away from the wall (e.g. if a Tiger Tosser threw you onto the trap). The log hits you, knocking you back into the wall (which also damages you), which generates another log, and so on. This will repeat until either you die, the trap breaks, or the trap fails to trigger.

Traps (Japanese: ワナ) are common hazards in dungeons in Nintendo Switch/Steam Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate (2020). There are 33 total traps.

Summary

Traps that are pre-placed on the floor are ordinarily invisible. They become permanently visible if you attack the air over them, if you step on them (whether they trigger or not), or if you deliberately trigger them while floating. When visible, traps show up as X's on your minimap.

Traps become temporarily visible if you eat Perception Grass and gain the Farseeing status.

Traps that you create by triggering a Multiplication Trap, wearing a Trap Bracelet, or reading a Monster House Scroll start out invisible. Karakuroids create visible traps.

Traps trigger 84% of the time if invisible, and 62% of the time if visible.[1] You can forcibly trigger a trap by standing on it and using the Feet menu, or throwing an item on top of a (permanently?) visible trap.

An item cannot occupy the same tile as a trap. So if a thrown or dropped Item lands somewhere you didn't expect, the tile where the item should have landed has an invisible trap.

Traps cannot be destroyed by an explosion.

Arrow traps have a chance of disappearing each time they trigger. Monster Trap, Summon Trap, Time Switch Trap and Point Switches always disappear after triggering.

Placement

Traps are never pre-placed in shops, in hallways, or on entrance tiles just inside pre-existing hallways. New traps you create that are invisible (e.g. by wearing a Trap Bracelet) also adhere to these constraints, but Karakuroids can create traps anywhere when they die.

Traps are never pre-placed under rock outside of the Explosion Rocks minigame.

Special Traps

Some special traps can never disappear or be removed in any way. These traps are always visible, and always trigger when you step on them.

On floors with separate rooms but no hallways, every room has a special Spring Trap which you can step on to warp to a random location elsewhere on the floor. This Spring Trap also appears on the 2x2 item islands, in the 4x4 vaults filled with Gitan, and in Pick-A-Choice shops. Pick-A-Choice shops also have a special Pit Trap. The Jumping Floors in Tower of Fortune are also special traps.

Common Mitigations

  • Perception Grass lets you see all traps, while Trap Deletion Scroll deletes all traps on the floor (except special traps). Waving a Trap Deletion Scroll will delete all traps in a straight line.
  • Floating Bracelet (available as an Inori Cave wish and in some difficult dungeons) lets you avoid all traps, although you can still trigger them deliberately.
  • Trapper Bracelet enables Trapper Bracelet Mode, which makes it so monsters trigger traps instead of you.
  • You can attack over every tile to reveal any trap before you walk on it. Doing this for an entire dungeon run is slow and tedious, and can result in starvation. However it can be worth it in specific situations.
    • For small monster houses, swing over every tile that does not have a visible item on it and that isn't an entrance/exit tile, to reveal all traps in that room.
    • For larger monster houses, swing over every tile you need to step on to pick up all the items you want to pick up, preferably in some sort of pattern so you can remember which tiles you've checked and which you haven't.
    • If a monster knocks off your items to the floor, check for traps as you move to retrieve it so you don't risk an Explosion, Pit or Floor Warp Trap.

Trapper Bracelet Mode

In Trapper Bracelet Mode, all traps are visible, and they affect monsters instead of you. You can also pick up traps like items, and place them on the floor. You enter this mode if you equip a Trapper Bracelet (not a Trap Bracelet!) or a new item equivalent. Trapper Bracelet Mode is permanently enabled in Gen's Turf and Trapper's Sandbox.

List of Traps

Sprite Traps In-Game Description Mitigation Usage Tips Finding Tips Additional Notes
English Japanese
Wood Arrow Trap 木の矢のワナ (Does a small amount of damage to you.) Dodger Pot Throw items on these to generate 1 to ~30 arrows from a single trap. Easiest with rocks, but other items work too if the trap is adjacent to a wall, or if you can throw from exactly 10 tiles away. You can also farm arrows using a Dodger Pot. Common Arrows come out from a 90 degree angle to the way Shiren is facing, passing over the trap location, so they will never hit you if you throw an item onto the trap. Very rarely, you can use this to hit a monster.
Iron Arrow Trap 鉄の矢のワナ (Does a larger amount of damage to you.) Dodger Pot Common
Poison Arrow Trap 毒矢のワナ (Does a small amount of damage and poisons you, lowering your strength and speed.) Dodger Pot, Cleansing Bracelet, Antidote Grass, Peach Common
Log Trap 丸太のワナ (Does a small amount of damage to you and knocks you back up to 10 tiles.) Steady Shield prevents the knockback but not the damage. Very rarely, you can use these to knock yourself somewhere you want to go, e.g. onto a small 2x2 island. Or you can sometimes hit a monster and move it towards you. Common Log comes out in front of Shiren, knocking him backwards. It is possible to get stuck in a loop when it's against a wall and you are facing away from the wall (e.g. if a Tiger Tosser threw you onto the trap). The log hits you, knocking you back into the wall (which also damages you), which creates another log, and so on. This will repeat until either you die or the trap fails to trigger.
Rockslide Trap 落石のワナ (Does a larger amount of damage to you.) If you are on low HP, heal in place before you wander around Common
Metal Block Trap 鉄塊のワナ (Does a larger amount of damage to you.) Common
Explosion Trap 爆発のワナ (Halves your HP, destroys all items on the ground around you, and grills any Onigiri in main inventory.) Anti-Blast (1) Rune cuts damage by 50%, Anti-Blast (2) prevents all damage If you're not otherwise in danger, you can use this to grill any Onigiri you have into Grilled Onigiri, which provide food value and heal you. You can also use it to destroy any monsters around you, especially if you have one of the Anti-Blast runes. Common
Big Explosion Trap 大爆発のワナ (Reduces you to 1 HP or kills you if you were at 1 HP, destroys all items on the ground, and grills any Onigiri in main inventory.) Common
Rust Trap サビのワナ (Your sword or shield or both get -1 upgrade points, unless the item was Rustproof.) Rustproof rune, Gold equipment Common
Strip Trap 装備外しのワナ (Removes all equipment, even if cursed.) Re-equip immediately, starting with your shield Use it to remove any cursed equipment. Lets you identify every sword and shield and test every bracelet without risk. Common If you have a torch equipped, this will destroy the torch.
Trip Trap 転びのワナ (Causes items (up to 4?) to fall out of your inventory, which can break pots.) Balance Staff You can use this to break pots, which is sometimes difficult to do in Hunter Pond. Common If you have a Nagging Staff and trip on a Trip Trap, you'll get a long dialog with the Nagging Staff taunting and chastising you.
Decay Trap デロデロのワナ (Onigiri and Peaches in main inventory rot.) Store food in pots, grill Rotten Onigiri Common Will kill you if you are in Onigiri form.
Curse Trap たたりのワナ (A random item in main inventory gets cursed or sealed.) Blessed items can often resist being cursed/sealed, put valuable items into pots Can be used to deliberately seal or curse an item. Drop other items first.
  • seal a Fever Pot or Black Hole Pot so Scoopies cannot ruin it
  • switch a sword, shield, or bracelet between cursed and sealed
  • Power up Mojo Bracelet
Common
Spring Trap バネのワナ (Shiren is warped elsewhere on the map.) Steady Shield, Unmoving rune Use this trap to flee a monster and (hopefully) get somewhere far away. If it does not trigger, you can trigger it manually via the Feet menu. Common Monsters get to attack you first if you warp next to them.
Sleep Trap 睡眠のワナ (Shiren is put to sleep for 5? 10? turns.) Alert Bracelet Identifies Alert Bracelet. Common
Blind Trap 目つぶしのワナ (Shiren is blinded for 5? 10? turns.) Perception Grass, Monster Detector, Scout Bracelet Common
Shadow Bind Trap 影縫いのワナ (Shiren cannot move for 5 turns, but can take other actions. Trying to move will pass your turn.) Find other things to do for a few turns. Common
Spin Trap 回転板のワナ (Shiren will be confused for ?10? turns.) Anti-Cnf. Bracelet, projectiles and staves still fire straight while confused Identifies Anti-Cnf. Bracelet Common
Gauge Blind. Trap ゲージ消失のワナ (Shiren won't be able to see stats like HP, fullness, etc. for many turns.) Keep track of HP yourself, avoid danger until it wears off Found in some bonus dungeons.
Onigiri Trap おにぎりのワナ (Shiren will be turned into an Onigiri for ?10? turns.) Onigiri Shield, Anti-Onigiri rune Found in some bonus dungeons. While an Onigiri, Shiren can move but can't use items or night abilities, and you have 0 attack and defense as if your equipment is removed. If you take fire or explosion damage, or step on a Decay Trap, you will die.
Slow Trap 鈍足のワナ (Shiren is slowed, from Swift to normal status, or normal to Slow status.) Peach, Swift Grass, avoid monsters Common
Hunger Trap 空腹のワナ (Shiren loses some fullness.) Eat food Common
Summon Trap 召喚のワナ (Summons 4 monsters around Shiren.) Strong equipment, emergency items such as Warp Grass, Hide Pot, Fear Scroll, etc. Can be used to create more monsters for monster drops and/or experience. Found in some bonus dungeons.
Monster Trap モンスターのワナ (Transforms all items in the same room into monsters.) Do not leave valuables on the ground Can be used to create more monsters out of junk items such as rocks. Found in some bonus dungeons. This trap is the main reason to check every tile for traps in monster houses, which are filled with many items and traps.
Rage Trap イカリのワナ (Gives Enraged status to all monsters in the current room, increasing their attack power.) Strong equipment, emergency items such as Warp Grass, Hide Pot, Fear Scroll, etc. Found in some bonus dungeons.
Cure Monster Trap 魔物活性化のワナ (Cures HP + status ailments of all monsters on the floor.) You could theoretically use this to wake up a Naptapir blocking a hallway. Found in some bonus dungeons. Wakes up any sleeping monsters on the floor.
Multiplication Trap ワナ増えのワナ (Makes more invisible traps across the entire floor.) Perception Grass, check every room tile after this goes off Use this to create useful traps such as Strip Traps, Arrow Traps and Point Switches. Note that you will need a way to see them. Found in some bonus dungeons. Similar to the Trap Scroll and Trap Bracelet. Traps made adhere to normal invisible trap placement rules: never in shops, hallways, or on the entrance tiles of any room.
Time Switch Trap 昼夜逆転のワナ (Switches between day and night.) You can use this trap to immediately switch between day and night. Trigger this when surrounded and all the monsters will disappear and the floor will be randomly repopulated with monsters. Old Road, Lost Well, Destiny's Descent, Cloister of Certain Doom, Garden of Destiny Similar to the Night-Day Scroll. Always disappears after triggering.
Pit Trap 落し穴のワナ (Drops you to the next floor.) Check every tile for traps if the current floor or the next few floors are particularly important. (Steady Shield does not protect you from these traps.) You can use this trap to go to the next floor, taking a small amount of damage along the way (~7 HP). Very useful if you need to get out of a bad situation. Common. Can be created by breaking a Black Hole Pot. A Pit Trap created from a Black Hole Pot lets you steal everything from a shop without any consequence. You can even sell everything you own before stealing it back.

Does not work on the final floor of a dungeon. (You will climb back out)

Floor Warp Trap フロア移動のワナ (Warps you forward 3 floors.) Same as Pit Trap, but the penalty of moving forward multiple floors is more severe. Can be used to skip through later floors of a difficult dungeon. Found in difficult dungeons, especially on deeper floors. Does not work on the final floor of a dungeon.
Stairs? Trap 階段のワナ (Trap icon looks like the staircase. Has multiple possible bad effects.) Shoot a monster with a Transient Staff to identify the real staircase, use Stairlight at night, Trap Deletion Scroll / Staff Found in difficult dungeons, especially on deeper floors. If you run towards the real staircase (not directly but 1 tile to the side), you will stop diagonally adjacent to it, but if you run towards a fake one you will stop orthogonally adjacent to it.
Duelist Trap 決闘のワナ (Triggers on monsters not Shiren, causing them to gain Dueling status for ?10? turns.) N/A If a monster steps on this trap, it temporarily gains "Dueling" status, and if you kill it in this state, it may drop a monster license for that kind of monster. Gen's Turf Monster licenses are the closest Shiren 5 analog to monster meat in Shiren 1.
Point Switch ポイントスイッチ (Adds points to your Points Card if you have it with you.) N/A If you have your Point Card in main inventory and it is not sealed, stepping on this "trap" will add points to your card. The number of points added depends on dungeon and floor. (Minimum of 10 on Destiny Trail floor 1, maximum of 220 on Lost Well 99F.) You can spend your points at the Point Shop in Nekomaneki Village. Common in dungeons that let you take items in, such as Tower of Fortune. Point Switches do nothing if you don't have your Point Card with you. They always trigger and disappear after use. You get double points if the Points Card is blessed, but the blessing disappears quickly. Warning! If the game ever crashes, you will lose all unspent points on your Point Card, even if you weren't carrying the Point Card with you.
