Title screen icons are something that's been around in the series since the original release of Shiren 1 for the Super Famicom. They denote the completion of certain achievements in the game set by the developers.

The original Japanese release of Shiren 5 on the Nintendo DS has 21 title screen icons, displayed in 3 rows of 7.  In the English version of the game on the PSVita, the icons are in the same order, but displayed in 2 rows of 11.  This may simply be the most convenient layout for the icons given the different aspect ratios of each of the devices' screens.  However, it enigmatically gives the appearance that there may be one additional icon yet to find, unique to the PSVita version.  If so, no one has yet found or documented it.
