Stats

Shiren has six main stats: level, maximum HP, maximum fullness, maximum strength, attack, and defense.

Level

Shiren gains a level every time he acquires enough experience points from fighting monsters. When he levels up, his maximum HP increases. Shiren starts each run at level 1. The maximum level is 99.

Level factors into the damage formula, although later levels suffer from diminishing return greatly. This page from the Japanese wiki has a link to a complex damage formula, which would imply that you gain more damage going from level 1 to 20 than from level 20 to 99. Each ten levels you gain starting at level 30 are worth about the same as 4 upgrade points on your sword (2.3 damage before type bonuses), up to about level 70. Level does not factor into defense.

Aside from fighting monsters, Shiren can also gain levels by eating a Cheery Grass or an Angel Seed. Shiren can lose levels if he eats an Unlucky Seed or a SuperUnlucky Seed, or if he gets hit by a high level DJ Mage.

Maximum HP

Shiren's maximum HP increases by a few points each time he levels up, but not in a consistent way. (See comment) Some Runes also add to his maximum HP.

Shiren can increase his maximum HP by eating a Life Grass, or a Herb, Otogiriso, or Heal Grass at full health. Polygon Spinna can decrease Shiren's maximum HP. The highest maximum HP Shiren can have is 500 without equipment, and 630 with all eight HP-increasing runes (+100) and the Wonder Pick / Nirvana Board Item Resonance effect(+30).

The HP regen rate decreases with higher maximum HP. The regen rate seems to be determined as follows:

  • 1.5 each turn, or alternating between 1 and 2 HP, if max HP is ??? is less
  • ??? if max HP is between ??? and 100
  • 100 divided by maximum HP each turn, if max HP is between 100 and 200
  • 0.5 each turn, or 1 HP every other turn, if max HP is 200 or greater.

Heal Bracelet boosts the HP regen rate to 3 each turn, regardless of max HP.

Maximum Fullness

Shiren starts each run with a maximum fullness of 100. The maximum fullness can be increased by eating a non-rotten Onigiri or Peach when full, or a Stomach Expander. It can be decreased via a Stomach Shrinker or a Polygon Spinna's attack. The highest maximum fullness Shiren can have is 200.

Shiren's fullness decreases by 1 point every 10 turns normally. When his fullness reaches 20 and 10, there will be a message saying he is hungry. When fullness reaches 0, he takes 1 HP damage every turn. Fullness can be restored by eating Onigiri, Peaches, and Grasses. Being revived by a Revival Grass or Undo Grass restores fullness to maximum.

Maximum Strength

Shiren start each run at 8/8 strength. The maximum strength can be increased by eating a Strength Grass at full strength, or by getting the strength effect while eating a Special Onigiri. It can be decreased via a high level Scorpion's attack. The highest maximum strength Shiren can have is 56 with two Strength Bracelets, or 50 without.

Shiren's strength can fall below its maximum value if he eats a Poison Grass or have a Mutaikon throw it at him, or eats a Rotten Onigiri, or gets hit by a Poison Arrow Trap or a Scorpion's attack. It can be restored to the maximum by eating a Peach or Antidote Grass, using a Heal Pot, or being revived by a Revival Grass or Undo Grass. The minimum strength value is 1.

According to the damage formula (see Level section above), each additional point of strength is worth about 1.7 damage (~3 upgrade points on sword) at 8 strength, and about 1.1 damage (~2 upgrade points) at 20 strength, before applying type bonuses from sword runes. Each point of strength below 8 subtracts about 0.6 damage (~1 upgrade point).

Sparkling floors require 7, 8 or 9 strength to dig up.

Attack and Defense

The attack and defense stats come from sword and shield respectively. Each piece of sword or shield has a base attack or defense value depending on its type. Each upgrade point increases the value by 1.
