Template:Infobox Scrolls (Shiren 1)

The Sanctuary Scroll (Japanese: せいいきの巻物) is a scroll introduced to the Super Famicom release of Shiren 1. Dropping a Sanctuary Scroll will make the space with the scroll on it into a "sanctuary" spot. If Shiren is standing on the scroll space, they will gain the following protection:

  • Monsters will not melee/normal attack Shiren.
  • Monsters will not use abilities that are only have use while next to Shiren. e.g. Cursing items, reducing maximum or current Fullness or draining maximum Strength.

Attacks and abilities that are normally ranged, can be used from afar and while next to Shiren. e.g Dragon fire, Rocks thrown, Magic bolts fired, Arrows shot, or Cannons fired

Once a Sanctuary Scroll has been placed or dropped on the ground, it cannot be picked back up.

Unlocking the Sanctuary Scroll

Because Sanctuary Scrolls cannot be found, purchased or created from a Jar of Change, instead, finding one to read so that the name can be written onto a Blank Scroll is virtually impossible.

Instead, the ability to obtain one using a Blank Scroll can be unlocked by completing Table Mountain at least once. Once you have completed this task, the game will note your accomplishment in various ways, but the most obvious is the Golden Condor icon when you load your save file.

Tips for use

  • Sanctuary Scrolls will not work against hostile NPCs or Special Enemies.
  • Putting one of these on the ground can save you when surrounded, especially in Monster Houses, however you will still be vulnerable to ranged attacks. Explosions (including Popster Tank Family attacks) can destroy a Sanctuary Scroll.
  • You cannot pick up a Sanctuary Scroll that was created using a Blank Scroll that was already on the floor.
  • Thiefwalrus Family Monsters, including transformed Shiren, cannot steal/pick up a placed Sanctuary Scroll.

Trivia

  • The Sanctuary Scroll and the Destruction Scroll are the only Scrolls that require a task to be completed to unlock creating them.
  • Within the confines of normal gameplay, it should be impossible to obtain a genuine 'Sanctuary Scroll', and not a 'Blank:Sanctuary Scroll'.
  • Unlike other items, walking on top of a Sanctuary Scroll will not cause a menu of that item to open.
  • A Sanctuary Scroll placed directly on the floor of a Warehouse will be saved and stay there when you enter the warehouse again.
