Sanctuary Scrolls do not appear in the dungeons as drops. The only way to get one is via a Blank Scroll: writing the word "Sanctuary" on a Blank Scroll will create a Sanctuary Scroll. However, there's a catch-22 here: you cannot write onto a Blank Scroll the name of a scroll you have not read before... and if you can never find a Sanctuary Scroll, you can never read it to be able to write it onto a Blank Scroll. The game dodges this problem by giving you the opportunity to "unlock" the ability to inscribe it onto a Blank Scroll. To unlock the scroll, you need to clear Table Mountain at least once. Once you have completed this task, the game will note your accomplishment in various ways, but the most obvious is the Golden Condor icon when you load your save file.

The Sanctuary Scroll (Japanese: せいいきの巻物) is a scroll introduced to the Super Famicom release of Shiren 1. Dropping a Sanctuary Scroll will make the space with the scroll on it into a permanent "sanctuary" spot. If Shiren is standing on the scroll space, monsters won't attack Shiren in melee. However, monsters will still use ranged attacks against Shiren. Once dropped, the Sanctuary Scroll can't be picked back up.

Unlocking the Sanctuary Scroll

Because Sanctuary Scrolls cannot be found, purchased or created from a Jar of Change, instead, finding one to read so that the name can be written onto a Blank Scroll is virtually impossible.

Instead, the ability to obtain one using a Blank Scroll can be unlocked by completing Table Mountain at least once. Once you have completed this task, the game will note your accomplishment in various ways, but the most obvious is the Golden Condor icon when you load your save file.

Tips for use

 • Putting one of these on the ground can save you when surrounded, especially in Monster Houses.
