:In the late 90s I asked an Enix USA VIP why and they replied, "We don't like the cartoony art style. It's too kiddy and not the image we want to convey." I spluttered, "Dragon Ball is HUGE on TV now, you've gotta push Toriyama art HARD right now." Then, the merger happened.
:I didn't work on that one, and it was released by Eidos. Out of the Enix USA DW/DQ titles I'd worked on, DW3 and DWM2 got Toriyama art. DW 1+2 and Torneko did not.

:I worked like a cat with its tail on fire the whole time. Enix told George, the localization producer, to shut down the project. But I wanted to bring Torneko over because it's a great game. So I managed to convince him I'll do it within the remaining time and budget. I guess I had three weeks. I even had to go into surgery on a hyperextended shoulder and spend a night at the hospital. The next day, I convinced my surgeon I was fine and I could rest just as easily at home...and went back to work with an arm in a sling.

:Serves Enix USA right for being cheap slavemasters without editorial backup. They were paying me a third of my usual rate and with minimal deadlines. It was completely chaotic. I'm pretty certain I've never had as much fun. I got into the trade because I wanted a shot at translating DQ4 (which had already been done without me realizing), so I jumped when the GBC 1+2 retranslation was offered. It's a damned shame PS DQ4 was cancelled--I'd just started Torneko's chapter when they canned it. So much about Enix USA was by the seat of the pants. George Torii and I defied Enix Japan's order to shut down PS Torneko because the wiki-credited loc company made a total mess of things and used up most of the budget. We rescued it by beating the deadline at minimal cost.

:The only comp copies of games I got were from Enix USA, who were otherwise extremely cheap. Before the merger, they operated out of a 2-story, 4-suite stucco building which also housed a nail salon (later their QA room). It had plywood doors. No reception space or counter. It was in the north end of Seattle, closer to the water, west off I5 at Boylston? Charleston? something like that. In a kind of grungy area with single homes and light industrial/commercial lots with big gravel lots. I circled it twice thinking, "This can't be it." Going up the concrete steps to the wooden door was surreal. It was the most threadbare setup ever. Lots of misgivings. It wasn't much better inside. Had all the charm of a hastily constructed war-room in a former lumber warehouse. I felt at home right away.
:Enix USA folded during the SNES era and was kept alive by Paul Handelman as the sole custodian. That's why N64 Mischief Makers was loced and published by NOA. It was resurrected under Paul to do PS Valkyrie Profile. I did GBC DQ1+2, 3, DQM2, PS RAD, Torneko for them.

:If Enix hadn't merged with Square, I probably would've had the opportunity to work on more, like Star Ocean...2, was it? But when the merger happened, Enix USA was shut down for good. Working for them was terrible with lousy pay and short deadlines, but it was also the most fun.
:But yeah, I loved Torneko on SFC, so I jumped at the chance to localize the PS outing. We managed to get it done when Enix JP was already telling George, "The budget's been spent, and there's no deadline left. Shut it down."

:I believe Square USA producer George Torii worked on Chocobo MD, and then Torneko at Enix USA. Torneko was on the verge of cancellation because the YVR-based localizer made a huge mess, depleted the budget, and was almost out of deadline time. Enix Japan said to can it. I, however, loved Torneko, so I volunteered to do it for DIRT CHEAP over the three weeks left, so George could ignore Enix Japan. I managed to get it done on time (with shoulder surgery thrown in--when I told George, "Oh. You're going to make deadline, right?").

:Chocobo MD was localized by then Square USA localization producer George Torii, making it the first of the MD-type roguelikes. He went onto pre-merger Enix USA where he got me to do Torneko, which was on the verge of cancellation.

I was incensed at "AG Devil" when I realized they used the chemical element abbreviation for "Silver." Also, since I got to the GBC remakes of DQ 1+2, and 3, I retained the names that were in those for DQ Monsters 2 and Torneko tLH.

:In PS1 Torneko the Last Hope, the VN-like part in the JP original was cut. I wish they would've told me it was getting cut before I did it entirely.
:I'm not sure how they cut it. It could very well still be in the code, but disabled. Not sure if they dropped in my translated text.
:Wait, it wasn't so much a VN, but more an RPG sort of an event where you wandered around talking to goldfish and tools or something. It was strange and didn't have anything to do with the rest of the game.
:I was annoyed it was removed too. It was such a weird thing that really had nothing to do with the overall game.
