Spike Chunsoft Co., Ltd. (Japanese: 株式会社スパイク・チュンソフト) is a Japanese video game development and localization company specializing in role-playing video games, visual novels, and adventure games. The company is the result of the merging of two older companies, Chunsoft and Spike, which happened in 2012.
History
Since the merging, the company kept working on new IPs with key people who are, or were part of one of the two companies before making their own company, such as the AI: The Somnium Files series (2019), and Master Detective Archives: Rain Code (2023). Simultaneously, they were also able to work on their existing franchises, made before the merging.
In 2017, Spike Chunsoft established a North American subsidiary based in Long Beach, California to carry out localization and publishing of its own games, in addition to games by its sister company 5pb./Mages under a newly formed partnership. The company is named Spike Chunsoft, Inc. Their first game under the Mages partnership was the Microsoft Windows version of Steins;Gate, taking over publishing of the game from Mages in 2018; they have since continued publishing further games in the Science Adventure series, including Steins;Gate 0 and Chaos;Child.
On July 16, 2020, NIS America announced that Danganronpa games on the PlayStation Store would be removed. Spike Chunsoft subsequently announced on July 22, 2020 that they were taking on publishing the Danganronpa series outside of Japan.[2] Similarly, the Nintendo Switch and Steam release of /
Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate (2020) were not published by Aksys Games but by their subsidiary. This let to a delisting of games not published by Spike Chunsoft but developed by them later on, such as the western Vita release of
Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate who was delisted from the PlayStation Store in 2023.[3] By the middle of 2021, the company's income increased significantly thanks to the success of
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX,[4] then became stable with the help of
