Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island (Japanese: 不思議のダンジョン 風来のシレン6 とぐろ島探検録, Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer 6 - Coil Island Exploration Record) is an upcoming Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer game, developed and published by Spike Chunsoft, scheduled for release on Nintendo Switch in 2024. It marks the first game to be released in 13 years after the previous numbered mainline game, Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate.[1]
Gameplay[edit | edit source]
The gameplay is similar to other Shiren the Wanderer games, featuring a main level reset dungeon. Items are lost when the player is defeated.[2] The game uses 3D graphics.

There is an entity called Jakaku (Japanese: ジャカクー) that Shiren is expected to fight against, presumably a monster.
Gameplay Elements[edit | edit source]
New Features[edit | edit source]
- On the map, tiles that have been walked on or checked are marked with a different color.
- While this is new in the Shiren the Wanderer series, this feature existed in the two first Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon games.
- The number of items in the inventory and the maximum capacity of the inventory are displayed in the top right corner of the screen alongside Gitan.
- On the bottom right corner of the screen, the buttons for opening menus are shown.
- The Adventure Results screen shows the playtime, the amount of turns taken, and the amount of defeated monsters during the Adventure.
- There are two message logs shown during gameplay. The most common one where gameplay actions such as attacks are explained is on the right. The orange message box appears on the left and displays notifications. A known use of it is logging monsters that have been met for the first time.
- When holding to change direction, the map displays a line in the direction the player is facing.
- 3x3 tiles monsters (as normal enemies, not bosses).
- They will appear randomly in certain dungeons.
- They have a barrier in front of them, in the direction they are facing.
- 3x3 tiles monsters have previously appeared in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series since Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon.

- Serpentcoil Island (Japanese: とぐろ島), the main setting of the game. It's inspired by the Setouchi region in Japan.[3]

- Secluded Path (Japanese: 忍び道) floors 1 and 8
- Sozoro Bay (Japanese: そぞろケ浦) floors 1 and 2
- Overhanging Mountain Pass
(Japanese: 鈴なり峠) floors 3 and 4 - Mt. Jingara - Up (Japanese: ジンガラ山 上り) floor 5
- Mt. Jingara - Down (Japanese: ジンガラ山 下り) floor 7
- Snakehead Mountain - Low Rise (Japanese: 蛇頭山 低層) floor 24

Plot[edit | edit source]
A few months after the events of Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer - Monster of Moonlight Village[4], Shiren and Koppa have a dream that leads them to a small volcanic island where a monster at the top of a mountain is said to have treasures in its belly.[2]
Shiren the Wanderer and his companion, Koppa the talking ferret, return for an all-new roguelike dungeon crawling adventure on Serpentcoil Island! After receiving a vision of a mysterious girl held captive by a terrible monster, Shiren and Koppa make their way to Serpentcoil Island—a distant isle rumored to be the lost stronghold of treasurehoarding pirates. Determined to rescue the girl and find the treasure, the two race into danger... only to be soundly defeated, like all the others who tried before. Undeterred, Shiren and Koppa vow to challenge the monster again in order to save the mysterious girl. To brave the many dangers that await them, Shiren and Koppa must traverse complex dungeons filled with hostile monsters, hidden traps, and useful items. All the gear and experience Shiren accumulates will be lost if he collapses during exploration, so beware of rushing in unprepared! Rescue the mysterious girl and uncover the mystery that clouds Serpentcoil Island![5]
Development and Release[edit | edit source]
Development of a new Shiren game was proposed sometime before 2021, however, it was only started following the December 2020 release of Shiren 5 thanks to the unexpected good sales and public reception of the Nintendo Switch version.[3] That same December 2020 release of Shiren 5 included a new message by Shin'ichiro Tomie explaining that he would like to work on a new Shiren game, and asking fans to make their voices heard if they want one.
The game was announced in the Nintendo Direct on September 14, 2023, only in the Japanese version. It will be released by Spike Chunsoft in Japan on January 25, 2024.[1] The game is known to have official English and Traditional Chinese translations.
