Chocobo (Japanese: チョコボ) is the main character for the Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon franchise.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Physical appearance[edit | edit source]

Chocobo appears as a large bird with yellow feathers. There exist many variants of the species with different colors for their body and behavior, including their feathers.

Personality[edit | edit source]

While Chocobo appeared through numerous games as a different character for each one, in general it behaves friendly towards some specific characters.

Name[edit | edit source]

The name "chocobo" derives from a Japanese brand of chocolate malt ball by Morinaga, ChocoBall (Japanese: チョコボール). The mascot for this product is Kyoro-chan (Japanese: キョロちゃん), a bird who says "kweh". (Japanese: 食う / くう) is a rough way to say "eat", whose volitional casual form is (Japanese: 食え / くえ, Let's scoff 'em down!), leading to Kweh!

In Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon, the protagonist's name is "Poulet" (Japanese: プーレ), which is a French word that translates to "chicken".[1] This name would be reused in Chocobo's Dungeon 2.

In other media[edit | edit source]

Albeit the same Chocobo appears in the Chocobo franchise, there are rare occasions where this specific Chocobo appears as a cameo in other media.

The headgear was revealed in December 2015. The design takes some details from its appearance in Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon.[2]

The headgear was revealed to return during the Mr. Sakurai Presents "Sephiroth" presentation on December 17, 2020. It is planned to be released alongside the other Round 8 Mii Fighter costumes on December 22, 2020. The design has been updated from Super Smash Bros. 4 with a sharper beak and without the eyelashes or blushing cheeks, and takes some details from its latest appearance in the Chocobo franchise, being 2019's Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon: Every Buddy!.[2]
