The Pokémon species of the hero and partner is chosen by the player at the start of Nintendo 3DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity. This is a choice that constantly affects the game, as they are the main Pokémon used by the player during the story outside of Companion Mode. The hero is directly controlled by the player, while the partner follows while in the party. They are chosen at the beginning of the story from a list of five possible Pokémon with predetermined stats and moves. They start off with Moves that Pokémon of the same species can't learn otherwise. The game first asks for the Pokémon to use as the hero, and later asks for the Pokémon to use as the partner. The Pokémon that has been chosen as the hero can't be selected as the partner. In the Japanese version, the player is asked if the partner is male or female after selecting the Pokémon.

Trivia

  • While the option to choose female Pikachu has been removed from the North American and European releases, it is possible for female Pikachu to appear as the randomized hero or partner in the opening before the title screen. Additionally, female Pikachu appears in one of the Main Menu illustrations, which are the same in all versions.
