This page explains Team Mechanics as a gameplay element in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon video games.

Team

In each game, the player forms a Team. Recruited or befriended Pokémon become a part of the team, which then allows the player to add them to their party when adventuring in a dungeon, if the story and the dungeon itself allow it.

Game Boy Advance/Nintendo DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Team
Nintendo DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness
Nintendo DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky
Adventure Squad
Nintendo 3DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity
Nintendo 3DS Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon.
Rescue Team DX

Party

Party refers to Pokémon that are part of a team and are currently in use in a dungeon by the member of that team, controlled by the player. Some game allow a maximum of 3 party members, while others allow 4.

Game Boy Advance/Nintendo DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Team
Nintendo DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness
Nintendo DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky
Adventure Squad
Nintendo 3DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity
Nintendo 3DS Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon.
Rescue Team DX

The Hero

Hero Characters are special party members, as they are the main character controlled by the player and are thus affected by different mechanics compared to other team members.

Game Boy Advance/Nintendo DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Team
Nintendo DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness
Nintendo DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky
Adventure Squad
Nintendo 3DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity
Nintendo 3DS Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon.
Rescue Team DX

The Partner

Partner Characters are story characters that are part of the team and can be affected by different mechanics compared to other team members.

Game Boy Advance/Nintendo DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Team
Nintendo DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness
Nintendo DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky
Adventure Squad
Nintendo 3DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity
Nintendo 3DS Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon.
Rescue Team DX

Allies

Allies are Pokémon that follow the party, but are not in the party, meaning that the player has limited control over them. These can appear as story characters, in missions, or as part of the recruiting process in Rescue Team and Rescue Team DX. The maximum amount of allies can be different from the maximum amount of party members, although the latter affects the former, as more party members can mean less slots for allies.

Story

In some games, allies may join the player in dungeons during certain parts of the story.

Game Boy Advance/Nintendo DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Team
Nintendo DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness
Nintendo DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky
Adventure Squad
Nintendo 3DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity
Nintendo 3DS Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon.
Rescue Team DX

Escorts

Some missions may require the player to escort a Pokémon to a specific location.

Game Boy Advance/Nintendo DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Team
Nintendo DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness
Nintendo DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky
Adventure Squad
Nintendo 3DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity

Rescue Team DX

Helpers

A player may temporarily receive Helper Pokémon from other players.

Game Boy Advance/Nintendo DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Team
Nintendo DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness
Nintendo DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky
Adventure Squad
Nintendo 3DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity
Nintendo 3DS Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon.
Rescue Team DX

Recruits

In Rescue Team and Rescue Team DX, the player needs to complete the adventure successfully in order to fully add a Pokémon to the team. Before this, recruited Pokémon are allies, not party members.

Game Boy Advance/Nintendo DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Team
Nintendo DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness
Nintendo DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky
Adventure Squad
Nintendo 3DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity
Nintendo 3DS Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon.
Rescue Team DX

Djinn's Bottle

In Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, the Djinn's Bottle allows Hoopa to join the player as an ally. When talked to, Hoopa can summon more ally Pokémon.

Nintendo DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness
Nintendo DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky
Adventure Squad
Nintendo 3DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity
Nintendo 3DS Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon.
Rescue Team DX

Max Party Members and Allies

The maximum amunt of party members can affect the maximum amount of allies. The more party members, the less allies. Keep in mind that the party always has at least one member, the leader.

Game Max Party Max Allies Max Total
Game Boy Advance/Nintendo DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Team 3 3 4
Nintendo DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness 4 3 4
Nintendo DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky 4 3 4
Adventure Squad 4 4
Nintendo 3DS Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity 4
Nintendo 3DS Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon. 3
Rescue Team DX 3 7

Body Size

Body Size as a mechanic that affects the party and its allies.

In Rescue Team, each Pokémon's body size is represented by a Rescue Team - Star icon.png icon. Either 1, 2, or 4. Teams can have a max of 6 stars worth of body size in the party. Additional party members will be unable to join if they would surpass the limit.
